A Young Craftsman Builds a Stupa Umbrella

Kyaikhtisaung Monastery, Mon State Burma
Each stupa is crowned with a sacred umbrella adorned with gold, gems, and iconography. The tip of the stupas are made of solid gold sometimes weighing 4 to 5 kilos. The umbrellas are protected by a ring of steel spikes midway up the stupa, preventing would-be thieves from scaling it.
